Jesmonite pieces making at Lark!
Let’s work with jesmonite!
What is jesmonite?
An eco-friendly resin made from a combination of gypsum and water-based acrylic resin which, unlike epoxy resin, has a matte finish and almost resembles a lightweight concrete. This makes it perfect for homeware and gifts!
So come to Lark Studio based atCathays, Cardiff and make your own jesmonite pieces.
What are the different techniques and is it difficult to do?
Although working with jesmonite is a very straightforward and easy craft, but sticking to accurate measurements is key. There are two techniques you can try at our workshop at Lark:
Marbling - you can create a marbling effect by pouring two of your favourite colours into the mould.
Terrazo - this technique is really fun! It’s made by cracking thin sheets of jesmonite to make chips.
With these, you can create perfect pieces for your home decor and Instagram ;)
How much will you make?
At the workshop, you will get to use our fab selection of moulds to create 3 terrazo or marble products, which can range from candle holders, trivets, soap dishes, coasters or pots.
How it sets
All we do is leave our pieces in their moulds until they have set. You can tell when your piece is still drying as it will be warm to the touch. This is a sign that there is a chemical reaction happening. Once it is cold, it can be removed from the mould, which takes approximately 20 minutes regardless of the size of the piece.
Final stages
To finish off your new homeware and reveal the details of your patterns, you need to sand your work. If you have used the terrazo method, this will really make your piece pop!
Once your jesmonite pieces are ready, you will be given a small pot of vanish to apply at home.
Gemma & the Lark team hope to see you at one of Lark’s craft workshops in Cardiff soon!
